How to Get Vitamin D Safely from the Sun

If you live in a northern climate, chances are you’re not getting a lot of sunshine. This may put you at a disadvantage of receiving adequate vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D is important to the function of our immune system, bones and overall health. In fact, our bodies recognize its need so much that our skin synthesizes it when we are outdoors and are directly exposed to UVB rays. If you are not getting enough vitamin D through your diet or from the sun, taking supplements will help to increase your intake. Many people are deficient in vitamin D but what’s particularly notable is that those who suffer from psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and other skin diseases have very low levels of the vitamin and should consider sun therapy in conjunction with our line of products as an added healing method towards better skin health.

With the summer months ahead, sun protection is top of mind. The problem is that high SPF sunscreens are designed to block out solar UVB radiation since it contributes to skin damage and sometimes leads to cancer, affecting the absorption of vitamin D. The truth is that there is no sunscreen that provides 100 percent protection from the sun’s UV rays. An SPF 15 sunscreen filters out 93 percent of UVB rays while an SPF 30 filters out 97 percent and an SPF 50 only 98 percent. A small percentage of the sun’s rays will still reach your skin and the good thing is that it doesn’t take much sun exposure to produce vitamin D. It only takes between 10 to 30 minutes to get your daily requirement. If you plan on staying outdoors for longer, be sure to follow up with a good sunscreen.

Our SPF15 and SPF30 Daily Protective Skin Moisturizers are perfect for all your summer activities. They combine the benefits of our advanced hyaluronic acid moisturizers with UVA and UVB sunscreens to help reduce environmental skin damage that causes premature ageing of the skin. They also incorporate Vitamin E, an antioxidant, to provide your skin with natural conditioning. Have the best of both worlds this summer by getting enough sunlight and vitamin D the safe way.
